Five Tips for Preparing for Flu Season

Having the flu is nothing to joke about. Flu can even be deadly if you don’t see your doctor and get treatment. You will likely need considerable treatment to recover well.

We are in flu season, and seasonal conditions are favorable for widespread flu infections. You should do everything you can to reduce your risks of catching the flu. Keep these five tips in mind to keep your risks low during flu season. woman in white and red floral hijab

1.  Avoid Risky Situations

The flu is highly contagious. Germs can spread easily in public places like stores, public bathrooms and social gatherings.  You certainly can’t avoid these situations. However, you can reduce the spread of germs. Carry hand sanitizer with you, or wash your hands after being in a large crowd.

If an acquaintance has the flu, don’t socialize with that person until they recover. This isn’t to say avoid family and friends who might need your help through their illness. However, use caution when interacting with a person who is sick. Keep those interactions minimal.

2. Sanitize

Keeping a clean environment is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of getting the flu. Hand washing with soap and hot water is one of the top, doctor-recommended ways to reduce the spread of flu. You can also keep alcohol-based hand sanitizer as an added layer of protection after interacting with others.

Also keep your surroundings clean. Use disinfectant cleaners in your surroundings regularly. These cleaners are often very effective in killing germs that may be on surfaces.

3. Take Care of Yourself

Science has proven that a healthy lifestyle helps boost your immune system. Maintaining a healthy diet with lots of vitamins and proteins can boost your immune system. Regular exercise that improves your blood pressure and muscle resistance can also benefit you.

4. Get a Physical

If your health insurance covers a yearly physical, don’t neglect this visit to the doctor. At annual check-ups, the doctor can catch potential small problems before they get bigger. If you have an undiagnosed problem, then your body may be more susceptible to the flu. By staying on top of issues, you can improve your health.

5. Get a Flu Shot

The influenza vaccine is one of the most effective ways to reduce your risks of catching the flu. Most people get the vaccine in early fall, and the vaccine is generally good for one year. Doctors recommend the vaccine for everyone. However, the vaccine particularly benefits young children, the elderly, and anyone who has a compromised immune system.

Your health insurance will likely cover some or all of the cost of a yearly flu shot.
